ue to come up in 2008 and 2009. That could be a huge explosion for this business.”
Pratt & Whitney’s advanced proprietary technologies
include high-temperature alloys, metallic and ceramic coatings, film cooling, tip clearance material systems and computational modeling techniques. Primarily involved in Frame-type hot gas path components, PWPS’s design enhancements
have included offering parts that minimize oxidation, tip
shroud curling, platform cracking, creep and metal temperature, which will ultimately extend part life and help reduce
operating costs, according to the company.
“Our repair experience focused on the hot gas path initially
because the return potential on hot gas path product is high.
This also led us into the manufacturing of selected parts,”
Hilton said. “Due to necessity, we’ve designed and patented
many of our own alloys for the hot gas path components.”
The company’s coating systems are used to refurbish hot
section components, provide oxidation/corrosion protection
and aid in temperature reduction through the use of ceramics. Also developed is an external TBC stripping and internal
cooling passage cleaning process designed to minimize the
potential for component life degradation.
“Also, there is a lot of discussion and interest for European
parts and repairs, as well as in Asia,” Hilton said. “If some of
the current development team initiatives come to fruition in
the next couple of years, we could be tripling the part numbers out there.” A
