Siemens’ South Korean Power Plant Order
The Siemens Power Generation Group (PG) has secured an order from South
Korea state-owned utility Korea Midland Power Co. Ltd. (KOMIPO) to supply
key components for a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plant within
Incheon in the vicinity of the capital Seoul. The order volume is approximately
US$180 million and the plant is scheduled to start commercial operation in the
summer of 2009.
Siemens PG will build the 550 MW Incheon II power plant in the immediate
vicinity of Incheon I — the company had completed this facility for the same
customer in 2005. For Incheon II, Siemens PG will supply the power island
comprising two SGT6-4000F gas turbines, one SST6-5000 steam turbine and
three generators, as well as the entire electrical and instrumentation and control
equipment. A
E&C will take charge of construction,
installation and HRSG procurement for
the KDHC plant. A
Successive Korean GTCC Orders for MHI
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) has received successive orders for gas
turbine combined-cycle (GTCC) power generation systems from Korea Western
Power Co. Ltd. (KOWEPO) and Korea District Heating Corp. (KDHC). The two
orders are for KOWEPO’s Gunsan power station and KDHC’s Paju combined heat
and power plant respectively. Both systems are scheduled to go on-stream in
November 2009. MHI will supply M501G gas turbines to the KOWEPO plant, an
order that represents the first introduction of the M501G into Korea. The gas turbines for KDHC’s Paju plant are the M501F.
The 750 MW GTCC plant for KOWEPO will be installed at a new power station being built in Gunsan, a coastal city in Jeollabuk-do. Construction of the
plant is under way, in line with Korea’s 3rd Basic Plan for Restructuring the
Electricity Industry.
The order for the GTCC power generation system for KDHC’s Paju combined
heat and power plant was received by MHI and three major Korean construction
companies: Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. (Daewoo E&C),
Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. (Hyundai E&C) and POSCO
Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. (POSCO E&C). The 515 MW facility, which
is to supply power and district heating, will be built in Paju-city, Gyeonggi-do,
located northwest of Seoul.
Each GTCC power plant will consist mainly of two gas turbines, one steam generator, one heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and three generators. MHI will be
responsible for manufacturing the gas and steam turbines. Mitsubishi Electric Corp.
will supply the generators. Marubeni will provide steam condensers and other components for the KOWEPO plant, while Daewoo E&C, Hyundai E&C and POSCO
GE GTs for Kansas
Peaking Plant
GE Energy has received contracts
totaling approximately US$145 million
to supply four LM6000 aeroderivative
gas turbines and three Frame 7FA gas
turbines to Westar Energy Inc. for a
peaking-duty power plant in Emporia,
Kansas, U.S.A. The new, natural gas-fired Emporia Energy Center will operate in simple-cycle peaking mode and
will add more than 625 MW of capacity
to Westar’s grid. In addition to the
equipment, GE will provide technical
assistance during the installation phase
of the project.
Each of the LM6000 gas turbines will
be site-rated at 41 MW and will be
manufactured at GE’s facilities in
Houston, Texas, and Evendale, Ohio,
U.S.A. The units will be shipped during
the third and fourth quarters of 2007
and are scheduled to be in commercial
operation by the summer of 2008.
The three Frame 7FA gas turbines
will be site-rated at 154 MW and will
be manufactured at GE’s gas turbine
plant in Greenville, South Carolina,
U.S.A. The first 7FA unit will be delivered to the site by October of 2007 and
the remaining two machines by
August of 2008. The entire plant will
be in commercial operation by May of
2009. A
