mounted RB211 mechanical drive
packages from Mount Vernon, Ohio,
U.S.A., to a customer in Thailand. The
customer chose air travel, which meant
an Antonov An-124 aircraft was used
from the Rickenbacker airport near
Columbus, Ohio.
The U.K.-based company Air Partner
has also been heavily involved in the
movement of power generation equipment including gas turbines over
recent years either for installation or
when existing equipment has failed.
Most recently the company has been
air freighting small mobile power generator sets to areas where reconstruction is under way in the Middle East,
Africa and South Asia. However, similar urgent airlifts are often carried out in
the event of natural disasters, such as
earthquakes and hurricanes. Key generator components are typically flown
from Scandinavia, a recent route being
Helsinki to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The company said that freight movements for the oil and gas industries
tend to be rapid response “go now”
emergency situations moving spares
and/or engineers direct into remote airports. The company claimed that chartering is often the most cost-effective
and quickest way of moving equipment when the costly threat of lost production or exploration hovers. Antonov 12 aircraft are typically used for
such flights, but large engineered items
such as heavy gas turbines in excess of
100 tonnes are transported on heavy
lift Antonov 124s and Antonov 225s.
This often involved Air Partner’s
involvement in the design and manufacture of specialized transportation
skids, preparation, planning and delivery, as well as the flight itself.
Richard Smith, Air Partner’s freight
manager, said, “There is a wide range of
air charter solutions available depending on needs, and the service we provide is to identify the charter services
that best meet each enquiry. This may
be a whole aircraft charter in the case of
an emergency where time is of the
essence, a part-charter, or a combination of charter and scheduled freight
services when items are needed quickly, but not necessarily urgently.” A
