Several announcements from the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) top our “Industry News” this
month. The agency has finalized a rule
setting engine and fuel standards for
large U.S.-flagged ships. The rule adds
two new tiers of NOx standards and
strengthens EPA’s diesel fuel program
for affected ships. The regulation harmonizes with international standards.
Also, a final decision released by the
EPA finds that greenhouse gases
(GHG) present a threat to public health
and environmental quality. The agency
said that its finding “covers emissions
of six key greenhouse gases — carbon
dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydro-
fluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and
sulfur hexafluoride.”
And in other news, the agency is
proposing to strengthen the nation’s
sulfur dioxide (SO2) air quality stan-
dard for power plants, industrial facili-
ties, locomotives and large ships.
Waukesha Bearings has acquired
Inpro/Seal Co., a Rock Island, Illinois,
U.S.A., designer and manufacturer of
bearing isolator technologies.
Wood Group Gas Turbine Serv-
ices (GTS) has acquired Shanahan
Engineering.
MAN Nutzfahrzeuge transferred
part of its business involving high-speed engines to the group’s sister
company, MAN Diesel. Effective Jan.
1, 2010, these activities were integrated
into MAN Diesel to form the business
unit, High Speed.
GE Oil & Gas and Al Shaheen Energy
Services have signed two partnership
agreements consolidating PII Pipeline
Solutions’ presence in Qatar and the
Middle East, and establishing a joint venture (JV) for aftermarket services of tur-bomachinery equipment in Qatar.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
(MHI) recently announced plans to
establish a new company dedicated to
compressor business operations, effec-
tive April 1, 2010.

GE Energy has been awarded US$2
million to develop a sensor for en-
hanced geothermal systems.
HPI LLC has been recognized as
one of the FastTech 50 by the
Houston Business Journal and is also
the recipient of the related Enterprise
Champion Award.
