U.S. Navy Debuts Hybrid Propulsion
GE Marine reported
that the U.S. Navy
commissioned its new
LHD 8 ship, USS
Makin Island, in San
Diego, California,
U.S.A. The USS Makin
Island is the first U.S.
Navy amphibious
assault ship to feature
a hybrid propulsion
system that relies on
two LM2500+ gas tur-
bines or two diesel-electric propulsion systems, the company said. A

Wärtsilä Wins Ship Design Contract
Wärtsilä has signed a ship design contract with Pipavav Shipyard of India. The
contract calls for a total of 12 Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs) to be designed by
Wärtsilä and built by Pipavav, for delivery to Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd.
(ONGC). The yard is scheduled to begin production of the first seven vessels in
the first quarter of 2010. A
Rolls-Royce Equips
Island Offshore
Rolls-Royce has won an order to
design and equip two diesel electric
UT 776 CD offshore service vessels
for offshore shipowner, Island
Offshore. The vessels are to be built
by STX Europe for delivery in 2011
and 2012. These new-generation
supply vessels will be delivered with
a fully integrated equipment system
from Rolls-Royce, including engines,
propulsion systems and deck

ABB’s Azipods Propel Cruise Ship
Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas has completed its maiden voyage across the
Atlantic Ocean and has been delivered to its owner in Miami, Florida, U.S.A., in
time for its first commercial Caribbean cruise. ABB supplied a custom-made
electrical propulsion system for the vessel, comprising three 20 MW Azipod
propulsion units that provide the additional maneuverability required. A
HPI Commissions Automatic Control System
HPI, a supplier of turbine control solutions and turnkey power plants, has
announced the commissioning of a digital propulsion, power and steering control
system aboard the ex-USS Foster Self Defense Test Ship (SDTS). HPI designed the
system to replace the existing analog controls, creating a fully integrated remote
control system — allowing the SDTS to operate unmanned at sea. A
