Nameless?
There’s been somewhat of a great
debate about how to refer to the
decade that we have just bid farewell
to. Unlike previous decades, the 2000s
were never given an official moniker,
not that there hasn’t been widespread
attempt. Going back to the mid- to
late-’90s, several media outlets held
“name this decade” contests, however,
perhaps at the time, such a naming
debate was overshadowed by the fear
of how to adapt the world’s computers
from two digits to four (remember the
Y2K hysteria?).
You have to admit that there needs to
be a slogan, a reference, some type of
nomenclature for these years past. How
will the radio stations promote their
sounds of the “greatest hits from the
first decade of the century?”
In early contests, there appeared to be
some real contenders: the “zeros,” the
“ohs,” the “double ohs,” the “naughties”
(submitted by our British friends), or
simply the “two-thousands.” As the
decade wrapped up, there are still
efforts to put a name to the last 10 years
but they have taken on a different, per-
haps more jaded twist. Suggestions
now look like this: “o well,” the “owes,”
the “o no’s,” the “forget me naughts,”
the “bubbles,” the “uncheery o’s,” and
the “googles.”
The googles? I am not sure how this
fits in other than to look at how and
where the word “google” came from.
Google — the search engine as we know
it today — was, according to their cor-
porate website, named by its founders as
a play on the word “googol” — a math
term that refers to a number represented
by a 1 followed by 100 zeros. (Although,
I have found some sources out there
indicating that the company name was
simply a misspelling of the word
googol!) Official company website histo-
ry states that it “reflects their mission to
organize a seemingly infinite amount of
information on the web.”
Regardless, I still don’t see the connec-
tion. Would naming the decade “the
googles” be a play on the multiple, albeit
only double, “zero” numbering aspect of
the years 2000 through 2009, or possi-
bly and more probably, the fact that by
the end of the decade, commonly used
terms like “stimulus package” and
“deficit” symbolize what feels and looks
like an infinite number of zeros? Then
again, the American Dialect Society
recently honored the word google with
the “top word of the decade” award.
Perhaps that’s the connection.
Sincerely,
Sheila Gailloreto
